When Kate Met Georgie Rowse, Co-founder of Curator&Maker

a conversation with Georgie rowse

It's immediately clear upon meeting Georgie that she has a deep sense of awareness of the value of things, coupled with an enquiring mind. Growing up, her childhood home was filled with pieces that each told a story and that sense of authenticity and consideration has stayed with her through the years, shaping her path.

A career that began at the Royal Opera House, followed by years in interior design, ultimately led to an unexpected chapter: the creation of a shop for Garsington Opera. Given a blank canvas, Georgie set out to build something truly distinctive—collaborating with over 20 UK based makers to commission exclusive pieces that subtly nodded to the opera theme of the season. The result was an eclectic and compelling collection, celebrating exceptional craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind design. In time, the Garsington Opera shop became a destination in its own right—an essential stop on the opera circuit.

The formula worked, but the desire to branch out and go it alone was niggling and in 2022, Curator&Maker was born. However, far from being alone, Georgie launched the business with her brilliant photographer daughter, Tara, very much by her side.

In our fast-paced, “add to cart” world, Georgie and Tara set out to create something altogether different: a platform that truly celebrates unique British craftsmanship. Produced in short runs, each piece embodies a simple but powerful idea — once it’s gone, it’s gone.

True to her belief that everything has a story, Curator&Maker shows are always shaped around a central theme. The most recent, Home is Where the Hearth Is, inspired an extraordinary range of work — from striking ceramic candlesticks to a rare collection of handcrafted bellows, crafted by the last remaining bellows maker in the UK no-less.

Finding the right makers is both a joy and a challenge. “We look for authentic, lifelong creatives — not those who’ve simply picked something up as a passion project,” Georgie explains. “We want makers whose wares are their bread and butter.”

This ethos uncovers a richly eclectic mix of talent. Every May and November, Curator&Maker hosts a week-long exhibition in London where 14 selected designers present their work to the public. Each maker produces a small collection of limited edition pieces — and every show sells out. “Of course, we could sell more,” Georgie says, “but that’s not the point. The point is that if you’re lucky enough to own a piece, you know you have something truly special — an heirloom to treasure for years to come.”

In this way, Curator&Maker stands in quiet defiance of today’s influencer-driven culture. Georgie recalls an instance when an influencer requested a complimentary piece in exchange for promotion. “I was utterly confused,” she admits. “It went against everything we stand for. It was a no from me — and, more importantly, a no from the maker.”

It’s a philosophy rooted in intention rather than scale, in preservation rather than profit. Curator&Maker champions a slower, more deliberate approach — one that honours the integrity of British craft and the stories behind each piece. It’s a rare and refreshing outlook.

Please note that the next Curator&Maker show will be held in November. For 2026 only, there will be no show in May due to the recent arrival of Tara's newborn baby!
